RESUMEN

The field of biofabrication imposes stringent requirements on the polymerization activity and biosafety of photopolymeric hydrogel systems. In this investigation, we designed and synthesized four hemicyanine dyes with a D-π-A structure specifically tailored for biofabrication purposes. These novel dyes, incorporating carbazole (CZ), triphenylamine (TPA), anthracene (AN), and benzodithiophene (BDT) as electron donors, along with heterocyclic salt (IN) as electron acceptors, were prepared using a straightforward synthesis method. The absorption maxima of ANIN, CZIN, and TPAIN exceeded 500 nm, rendering them suitable co-initiators for the free radical photopolymerization of acrylates under green-red light exposure facilitated by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the co-initiator iodonium salt (ION). Notably, CZIN and TPAIN, due to their robust dye absorption and efficient electron transfer to ION, functioned as high-performance photosensitizers. Meanwhile, BDTIN, with its strong and broad absorption range (400-600 nm), enhanced the accuracy of visible light photopolymerization. These dyes exhibit characteristics such as facile synthesis, heightened photo stability, and non-toxicity and also demonstrate the ability to discern the alkalinity of a solution to some extent. Furthermore, we explored the application of these hemicyanine dyes in 3D printing, showing potential to enhance printing resolution in DLP 3D printing (digital light process 3D printing).

RESUMEN

This paper presents a visual compass method utilizing global features, specifically spherical moments. One of the primary challenges faced by photometric methods employing global features is the variation in the image caused by the appearance and disappearance of regions within the camera's field of view as it moves. Additionally, modeling the impact of translational motion on the values of global features poses a significant challenge, as it is dependent on scene depths, particularly for non-planar scenes. To address these issues, this paper combines the utilization of image masks to mitigate abrupt changes in global feature values and the application of neural networks to tackle the modeling challenge posed by translational motion. By employing masks at various locations within the image, multiple estimations of rotation corresponding to the motion of each selected region can be obtained. Our contribution lies in offering a rapid method for implementing numerous masks on the image with real-time inference speed, rendering it suitable for embedded robot applications. Extensive experiments have been conducted on both real-world and synthetic datasets generated using Blender. The results obtained validate the accuracy, robustness, and real-time performance of the proposed method compared to a state-of-the-art method.

Identifying high-risk factors (heavy metals (HMs) and pollution sources) by coupling receptor models and health risk assessment model (HRA) is a novel approach within the field of risk assessment. However, this coupled model ignores the contribution of spatial differentiation to high-risk factors, resulting in the assessment being subjective. Taking Dongting Plain (DTP) as an example, a coupling framework by jointly using the positive matrix factorization model (PMF), HRA, Monte Carlo simulation, and geo-detector was developed, aiming to identify high-risk factors in groundwater, and further explore key environmental variables influencing the spatial heterogeneity of high-risk factors. The results showed that at least 82.86 % of non-carcinogenic risks and 97.41 % of carcinogenic risks were unacceptable for people of all ages, especially infants and children. According to the relationships among HMs, pollution sources, and health risks, As and natural sources were defined as high-risk HMs and sources, respectively. The interactions among Holocene thickness, oxidation-reduction potential, and dissolved organic carbon emerged as the primary drivers of spatial variability in high-risk factors, with their combined explanatory power reaching up to 74%. This proposed framework provides a scientific reference for future studies and a practical reference for environmental authorities in developing effective pollution management measures.

Liver transplantation is an effective measure to treat adult-onset type II citrullinemia (CTLN2). Active and effective perioperative nutrition support is a very important treatment for the prognosis of such patients. In this paper, we analyzed the process, results, and outcome of nutritional support therapy in a case of CTLN2, and concluded that the perioperative nutritional support program for CTLN2 patients should be followed prior to surgery:1.because of the prevalence of severe malnutrition in CTLN2 patients, Enteral nutrition (EN) combined with Parenteral nutrition (PN) should be the first choice for nutritional support; 2. daily energy intake should be 35 ~ 40 kcal/kg; 3. the nutritional formula should be composed of low-carbohydrates and high medium-chain triglyceride (MCT). Postoperative: initiating EN as soon as possible is recommended to restore intestinal function and adjuvant PN might be taken into consideration in the early stage. The purpose of this case was to provide experience for the development and adjustment of the perioperative nutritional support regimen for CTLN2 patients.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Fenglong" (ST40) and "Zusanli" (ST36) of different intensities and durations on rats with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) based on the protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK)-activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4)-C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) signaling pathway, so as to explore its mechanism underlying improvement of NAFLD. METHODS: SD rats were randomly divided into normal diet group, high-fat model group, sham EA group, strong stimulation EA (SEA) group, and weak stimulation EA (WEA) group, with 15 rats in each group. Each group was further divided into 2, 3, and 4-week subgroups. NAFLD rat model was established by feeding a high-fat diet. After successful modeling, rats in the SEA and WEA groups received EA at bilateral ST40 and ST36 with dense and sparse waves (4 Hz/20 Hz) at current intensities of 4 mA (SEA group) and 2 mA (WEA group), lasting for 20 minutes, once a day, 5 days a week with 2 days of rest. The sham EA group only had the EA apparatus connected without electricity. Different duration subgroups were intervened for 2, 3, and 4 weeks. After the intervention, the contents of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in rats were detected by an automatic biochemical analyzer;liver morphological changes were observed by Oil Red O staining;real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR and Western blot were used to detect the expression of PERK, ATF4, and CHOP mRNAs and proteins in the rat liver tissue. RESULTS: In the high-fat model group, there was a significant accumulation of red lipid droplets in the liver cells, which was reduced significantly in the SEA group at the 4th week. Compared with the normal diet group with the same treatment duration, the contents of serum ALT, AST, and the expression of PERK, ATF4, and CHOP mRNAs and proteins in the liver tissue were elevated (P<0.01) in the high-fat model group . Compared with the high-fat model group with the same treatment duration, the contents of serum ALT, AST, and the expression of PERK, ATF4, CHOP mRNAs and proteins in the liver tissue were decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05) in the SEA and WEA groups. Compared with the sham EA group with the same treatment duration, the contents of serum ALT, AST, and the expression of PERK, ATF4, and CHOP mRNAs were decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05) in the SEA and WEA groups, the expression of PERK, ATF4, and CHOP proteins in the liver tissue was decreased (P<0.01) in the SEA group at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th week, the expression of PERK and CHOP proteins at the 2nd, 3rd, 4th week and ATF4 protein at 2nd week in the liver tissue were decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05) in the WEA group. Compared with the SEA group with the same treatment duration, the contents of serum ALT, AST, and the expression of PERK, ATF4, and CHOP mRNAs and proteins in the liver tissue were elevated (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the WEA group. Compared with the 2-week time point within the groups, the contents of serum ALT, AST, and the expression of PERK, ATF4, and CHOP mRNAs and PERK proteins in the liver tissue were decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05) in the SEA and WEA groups at 3rd and 4th week, the expression of ATF4 proteins in the liver tissue was decreased (P<0.01) in the SEA group at 3rd and 4th week, and the expression of CHOP proteins in the liver tissue was decreased (P<0.01) in the SEA group at 4th week and in the WEA group at 3rd and 4th week. Compared with the 3-week time point within the groups, the contents of serum ALT, AST, and the expression of PERK, ATF4, and CHOP mRNAs were significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the SEA and WEA groups at 4th week, the expression of PERK and CHOP proteins in the liver tissue was decreased (P<0.01) in the SEA and WEA groups at 4th week, and the expression of ATF4 protein in the liver tissue was decreased (P<0.05) in the SEA group at 4th week. CONCLUSIONS: EA at ST40 and ST36 can significantly improve liver function in NAFLD rats, and its mechanism of action may involve inhibiting PERK expression thereby targeting the downstream ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway to suppress endoplasmic reticulum stress, exerting a liver protective effect;the optimal effect was observed with EA intensity of 4 mA for 4 weeks.

Background: This study aimed to explore the current knowledge level of breast cancer among rural women in Southwest China and analyze the influencing factors of breast cancer cognition. Methods: From May to November 2022, 1468 rural women were invited to participate in this study. Demographic information and the Chinese version of the Breast Cancer Awareness Measure (C-BCAM) were collected through one-on-one investigations. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple regression analysis in SPSS 26.0. Results: The study included a total of 1468 rural women with a median age of 54.0 (IQR, 47.0, 60.0).The average score of breast cancer in the study population was 73.0 (IQR, 66.0, 82.0). Among women in Southwest China, the awareness rates of knowledge on breast cancer symptoms, barriers to seeking medical help, and risk factors were 68.8%, 98.4%, and 62.1%, respectively. The awareness rate was found to increase with higher education levels (P<0.001) and decrease with increasing age (P<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified three variables that might influence breast cancer awareness: education level, contraceptive measures, and history of breast disease (all P<0.05). Specifically, history of breast disease (Odds ratio (OR) = 1.907, 95% CI = 1.128 ~ 3.223), middle school education (OR = 2.155, 95% CI = 1.585 ~ 2.928), and junior college education and above (OR = 5.536, 95% CI = 1.898 ~ 16.148) were positive factors for women's breast cancer awareness. Conversely, the use of intrauterine devices (OR = 0.523, 95% CI = 0.384 ~ 0.712) was found to be a negative factor for women's breast cancer awareness. Conclusion: This study highlights the insufficient awareness of breast cancer among women in rural area of Southwest China. It emphasizes the necessity of health education to improve female breast cancer awareness.

Model-free reconstruction of bifurcation diagrams of Chua's circuits using the technique of parameter-aware reservoir computing is investigated. We demonstrate that (1) reservoir computer can be utilized as a noise filter to restore the system dynamics from noisy signals; (2) for a single Chua circuit, a machine trained by the noisy time series measured at several sampling states is capable of reconstructing the whole bifurcation diagram of the circuit with a high precision; and (3) for two coupled chaotic Chua circuits with mismatched parameters, the machine trained by the noisy time series measured at several coupling strengths is able to anticipate the variation of the synchronization degree of the coupled circuits with respect to the coupling strength over a wide range. Our studies verify the capability of the technique of parameter-aware reservoir computing in learning the dynamics of chaotic circuits from noisy signals, signifying the potential application of this technique in reconstructing the bifurcation diagram of real-world chaotic systems.

Organoiodine compounds (OICs) are the dominant iodine species in groundwater systems. However, molecular mechanisms underlying the geochemical formation of geogenic OICs-contaminated groundwater remain unclear. Based upon multitarget field monitoring in combination with ultrahigh-resolution molecular characterization of organic components for alluvial-lacustrine aquifers, we identified a total of 939 OICs in groundwater under reducing and circumneutral pH conditions. In comparison to those in water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in sediments, the OICs in dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater typically contain fewer polycyclic aromatics and polyphenol compounds but more highly unsaturated compounds. Consequently, there were two major sources of geogenic OICs in groundwater: the migration of the OICs from aquifer sediments and abiotic reduction of iodate coupled with DOM iodination under reducing conditions. DOM iodination occurs primarily through the incorporation of reactive iodine that is generated by iodate reduction into highly unsaturated compounds, preferably containing hydrophilic functional groups as binding sites. It leads to elevation of the concentration of the OICs up to 183 µg/L in groundwater. This research provides new insights into the constraints of DOM molecular composition on the mobilization and enrichment of OICs in alluvial-lacustrine aquifers and thus improves our understanding of the genesis of geogenic iodine-contaminated groundwater systems.

Nocturnal blood pressure and nighttime dipping patterns are associated with the occurrence of cardiovascular events. However, there is few research on whether riser pattern is associated with the poor prognosis of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and hypertension independent of nighttime systolic blood pressure (SBP). This prospective and observational clinical study included 568 hospitalized patients with CHD and hypertension. All patients underwent 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring during their hospitalization. Multivariate adjusted Cox proportional hazard models were utilized to examine the associations of nocturnal blood pressure and dipping status with primary endpoint events. Additionally, Harrell's C-statistics were employed to compare the discriminative ability of each model. During the 1-year follow-up period, 64 (11.3%) primary endpoint events were recorded, including 55 (9.7%) atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events. After adjusting for demographic and clinical risk variables, nighttime SBP was significantly related to the risk of incident primary endpoint events [per 20 mm Hg increase: hazard ratio (HR) = 1.775, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.256-2.507]. The riser pattern group exhibited a significantly higher risk for primary endpoint events compared to the dipper pattern group, even after adjusting for office SBP (HR: 2.687, 95% CI: 1.015-7.110, p = .047). Furthermore, the addition of nighttime SBP or dipping status to the base model yielded statistically significant increments in C-statistic values (p = .036 and p = .007). However, adding both nighttime SBP and dipping status did not significantly enhance the model's performance in predicting the risk of primary endpoint events and ASCVD events according to the C-index (p = .053 and p = .054), which meant that the riser pattern group did not exhibit a significantly higher risk for primary endpoint events compared to the dipper pattern group after adjusting for nighttime SBP. In conclusion, nocturnal SBP and riser pattern demonstrated an association with adverse prognosis in patients with CHD and hypertension. Notably, nocturnal SBP proved to be a more reliable predictor than dipping status.

The torque is a significant indicator reflecting the comprehensive operational characteristics of a power system. Thus, accurate torque measurement plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and stability of the system. However, conventional torque measurement systems predominantly rely on strain gauges adhered to the shaft, often leading to reduced accuracy, poor repeatability, and non-traceability due to the influence of strain gauge adhesion. To tackle the challenge, this paper introduces a photoelectric torque measurement system. Quadrants of photoelectric sensors are employed to capture minute deformations induced by torque on the rotational axis, converting them into measurable voltage. Subsequently, the system employs the radial basis function neural network optimized by simulated annealing combined with particle swarm algorithm (SAPSO-RBF) to establish a correlation between measured torque values and standard references, thereby calibrating the measured values. Experimental results affirm the system's capability to accurately determine torque measurements and execute calibration, minimizing measurement errors to 0.92%.

This study was designed to elucidate the colon microbiota-targeted release of nonextractable bound polyphenols (NEPs) derived from Fu brick tea and to further identify the possible anti-inflammatory mechanism in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) mice. 1.5% DSS drinking water-induced C57BL/6J mice were fed rodent chow supplemented with or without 8% NEPs or dietary fibers (DFs) for 37 days. The bound p-hydroxybenzoic acid and quercetin in NEPs were liberated up to 590.5 ± 70.6 and 470.5 ± 51.6 mg/g by in vitro human gut microbiota-simulated fermentation, and released into the colon of the mice supplemented with NEPs by 4.4- and 1.5-fold higher than that of the mice supplemented without NEPs, respectively (p < 0.05). Supplementation with NEPs also enhanced the colonic microbiota-dependent production of SCFAs in vitro and in vivo (p < 0.05). Interestingly, Ingestion of NEPs in DSS-induced mice altered the gut microbiota composition, reflected by a dramatic increase in the relative abundance of Dubosiella and Enterorhabdus and a decrease in the relative abundance of Alistipes and Romboutsia (p < 0.05). Consumption of NEPs was demonstrated to be more effective in alleviating colonic inflammation and UC symptoms than DFs alone in DSS-treated mice (p < 0.05), in which the protective effects of NEPs against UC were highly correlated with the reconstruction of the gut microbiome, formation of SCFAs, and release of bound polyphenols. These findings suggest that NEPs as macromolecular carriers exhibit targeted delivery of bound polyphenols into the mouse colon to regulate gut microbiota and alleviate inflammation.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive tract and is closely associated with the homeostasis of the gut microbiota. Inulin, as a natural prebiotic, displays anti-inflammatory activity and maintains equilibrium of the intestinal microbiota. In this study, our research aimed to explore the potential of inulin in enhancing intestinal immunity and reducing inflammation in stress-recurrent IBD. In this study, a co-culture intestinal epithelium model and a stress-recurrent IBD mouse model was used to examine the protective effects of inulin. It was observed that inulin digesta significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine expression (CXCL8/IL8 and TNFA) and increased MUC2 expression in intestinal epithelial cells. In vivo, our findings showed that Inulin intake significantly prevented IBD symptoms. This was substantiated by a decrease in serum inflammatory markers (IL-6, CALP) and a downregulation of inflammatory cytokine (Il6) in colon samples. Additionally, inulin intake led to an increase in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in cecal contents and a reduction in the expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers (CHOP, BiP). Our results highlight that inulin can improve stress-recurrent IBD symptoms by modulating microbiota composition, reducing inflammation, and alleviating ER stress. These findings suggested the therapeutic potential of inulin as a dietary intervention for ameliorating stress-recurrent IBD.

The environmental fate of arsenic (As) relies substantially on its speciation, which occurs frequently coupled to the redox transformation of manganese. While trivalent manganese (Mn(III)), which is known for its high reactivity, is believed to play a role in As mobilization by iron (oxyhydr)oxides in dynamic aquifers, the exact roles and underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. Using increasingly complex batch experiments that mimick As-affected aquifer conditions in combination with time-resolved characterization, we demonstrate that Mn(III)-NOM complexes play a crucial role in the manganese-mediated immobilization of As(III) by ferrihydrite and goethite. Under anaerobic condition, Mn(III)-fulvic acid (FA) rapidly oxidized 31.8% of aqueous As(III) and bound both As(III) and As(V). Furthermore, Mn(III)-FA exerted significantly different effects on the adsorption of As by ferrihydrite and goethite. Mn(III)-FA increased the adsorption of As by 6-16% due to the higher affinity of oxidation-produced As(V) for ferrihydrite under circumneutral conditions. In contrast, As adsorption by crystalline goethite was eventually inhibited due to the competitive effect of Mn(III)-FA. To summarize, our results reveal that Mn(III)-NOM complexes play dual roles in As retention by iron oxides, depending on the their crystallization. This highlights the importance of Mn(III) for the fate of As particularly in redox fluctuating groundwater environments.

We present a robust, cost-effective (<2000 USD), and portable optical diffuse speckle pulsatile flowmetry (DSPF) device with a flexible handheld probe for deep tissue blood flow measurement in the human foot as well as a first-in-man observational clinical study using the proposed optical device for tissue ischemia assessment and peripheral artery disease (PAD) diagnosis. Blood flow in tissue is inherently pulsatile in nature. However, most conventional methods cannot measure deep tissue-level pulsatile blood flow noninvasively. The proposed optical device can measure tissue-level pulsatile blood flow ∼6 mm underneath the skin surface. A new quantitative tissue perfusion index (TPIDSPF) based on frequency domain analysis of the pulsatile blood flow waveform is defined to assess tissue ischemia status. Through a clinical study involving 66 subjects, including healthy individuals and diabetes patients with and without PAD, TPIDSPF demonstrated strong correlations of 0.720 with transcutaneous tissue partial oxygen pressure (TcPO2) and 0.652 with toe-brachial index (TBI). Moreover, among the three methods, TPIDSPF demonstrated the highest area under the curve for PAD diagnosis among diabetes patients, with a notable value of 0.941. The promising clinical results suggest that the proposed optical method has the potential to be an effective clinical tool for identifying PAD among the diabetic cohort.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) continues to be a major health concern globally. Apolipoprotein (Apo) B/A1 ratio is a reliable predictor of ASCVD and an important factor in assessing the risk of myocardial infarction. Tissue prolapse (TP) is defined as the tissue extrusion into the lumen through the stent struts after implantation, which is a significant factor for poor short-term outcomes such as acute and subacute thrombosis, severe myocardial necrosis, and vulnerable plaque. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Apo B/A1, plaque vulnerability, and tissue prolapse on optical coherence tomography (OCT). This study enrolled 199 patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Both pre- and post-procedural optical coherence tomography (OCT) examinations were conducted to assess TP volume and plaque morphology. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify potential risk factors for tissue prolapse volume. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was carried out to evaluate the value of the Apo B/A1 ratio for tissue prolapse volume. The high Apo B/A1 ratio group showed a larger TP volume (P = 0.001) and a higher percentage of plaque rupture and erosion in comparison to the low Apo B/A1 ratio group (P = 0.022 and P = 0.008). The high Apo B/A1 ratio group and the high TP volume group also had a higher proportion of thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) (P = 0.046, P = 0.021). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that both Apo B/A1 ratio (odds ratio [OR]: 1.041, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.007-1.076; P = 0.019) and TCFA (OR: 3.199, 95%CI 1.133-9.031; 0.028) were significantly related to high TP volume. Furthermore, the area under the curve (AUC) for predictive value of TP volume was 0.635 for Apo B/A1 (95% CI 0.554-0.717, P = 0.002) compared to 0.615 for low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (95% CI 0.533-0.697, P = 0.008). The Apo B/A1 ratio is an independent predictor of TP volume on OCT and is related to plaque vulnerability.

Urban groundwater, serving as a critical reservoir for potable water, faces susceptibility to contamination from discrete sources such as hospital wastewater. This study investigates the distribution and plausible origins of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban groundwater, drawing comparisons between areas proximal to hospitals and non-hospital areas. Ofloxacin and oxytetracycline emerged as the prevalent antibiotics across all samples, with a discernibly richer array of antibiotic types observed in groundwater sourced from hospital-adjacent regions. Employing a suite of multi-indicator tracers encompassing indicator drugs, Enterococci, ammonia, and Cl/Br mass ratio, discernible pollution from hospital or domestic sewage leakage was identified in specific wells, correlating with an escalating trajectory in antibiotic contamination. Redundancy analysis underscored temperature and dissolved organic carbon as principal environmental factors influencing antibiotics distribution in groundwater. Network analysis elucidated the facilitating role of mobile genetic elements, such as int1 and tnpA-02 in propagating ARGs. Furthermore, ARGs abundance exhibited positive correlations with temperature, pH and metallic constituents (e.g., Cu, Pb, Mn and Fe) (p < 0.05). Notably, no conspicuous correlation manifested between antibiotics and ARGs. These findings accentuate the imperative of recognizing the peril posed by antibiotic contamination in groundwater proximal to hospitals and advocate for the formulation of robust prevention and control strategies to mitigate the dissemination of antibiotics and ARGs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Liver cancer is the second highest cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. It is commonly treated with liver transplantation, where tacrolimus is typically used as an antirejection immunosuppressant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of tacrolimus time in therapeutic range (TTR) on liver cancer recurrence in liver transplant recipients and to compare the performance of TTRs calculated according to the target ranges recommended in published guidelines. METHODS: A total of 84 patients who underwent liver transplantation for liver cancer were retrospectively included. Tacrolimus TTR was calculated using linear interpolation from the date of transplantation until recurrence or the last follow-up according to target ranges recommended in the Chinese guideline and international expert consensus. RESULT: Twenty-four recipients developed liver cancer recurrence after liver transplantation. The CTTR (TTR calculated according to the Chinese guideline) for the recurrence group was significantly lower than that of the nonrecurrence group (26.39% vs. 50.27%, P < 0.001), whereas the ITTR (TTR calculated according to the international consensus) was not significantly different between the two groups (47.81% vs. 56.37%, P = 0.165). Multivariate survival analysis revealed that age, microvascular invasion, hepatocellular carcinoma, CTTR, and mean tacrolimus trough concentration were independent predictors of liver cancer recurrence after liver transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: TTR predicts liver cancer recurrence in liver transplant recipients. The range of tacrolimus concentrations recommended in the Chinese guideline was more beneficial than that recommended in the international consensus for Chinese patients undergoing liver transplantation for liver cancer.

Elevated concentration levels of geogenic ammonium in groundwater arise from the mineralization of nitrogen-containing natural organic matter in various geological settings worldwide, especially in alluvial-lacustrine and coastal environments. However, the difference in enrichment mechanisms of geogenic ammonium between these two types of aquifers remains poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated two representative aquifer systems in central Yangtze (Dongting Lake Plain, DTP) and southern China (Pearl River Delta, PRD) with contrasting geogenic ammonium contents. The use of optical and molecular characterization of DOM combined with hydrochemistry and stable carbon isotopes has revealed differences in DOM between the two types of aquifer systems and revealed contrasting controls of DOM on ammonium enrichment. The results indicated higher humification and degradation of DOM in DTP groundwater, characterized by abundant highly unsaturated compounds. The degradation of DOM and nitrogen-containing DOM was dominated by highly unsaturated compounds and CHO+N molecular formulas in highly unsaturated compounds, respectively. In contrast, the DOM in PRD groundwater was more biogenic, less degraded, and contained more aliphatic compounds in addition to highly unsaturated compounds. The degradation of DOM and nitrogen-containing DOM was dominated by aliphatic compounds and polyphenols and CHO+N molecular formulas in highly unsaturated compounds and polyphenols, respectively. As DOM degraded, the ammonium production efficiency of DOM decreased, contributing to lower ammonium concentrations in DTP groundwater. In addition, the CHO+N(SP) molecular formulas were mainly of microbial-derived and gradually accumulated with DOM degradation. In this study, we conducted the first comprehensive investigation into the patterns of groundwater ammonium enrichment based on DOM differences in various geological settings.

Groundwater rich in dissolved methane is often overlooked in the global or regional carbon cycle. Considering the knowledge gap in understanding the biogeochemical behavior of methane in shallow aquifers, particularly those in humid alluvial-lacustrine plains with high organic carbon content, we investigated methane sources and cycling pathways in groundwater systems at the central Yangtze River basins. Composition of multiple stable isotopes (2H/18O in water, 13C in dissolved inorganic carbon, 13C/2H in methane, and 13C in carbon dioxide) was combined with the characteristics of microbes and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the study. The results revealed significant concentrations of biogenic methane reaching up to 13.05 mg/L in anaerobic groundwater environments with abundant organic matter. Different pathways for methane cycling (methanogenic CO2-reduction and acetate-fermentation, and methane oxidation) were identified. CO2-reduction dominated acetate-fermentation in the two methanogenic pathways primarily associated with humic DOM, while methane oxidation was more closely associated with microbially derived DOM. The abundance of obligate CO2-reduction microorganisms (Methanobacterium and Methanoregula) was higher in samples with substantial CO2-reduction, as indicated by isotopic composition. The obligate acetate-fermentation microorganism (Methanosaeta) was more abundant in samples exhibiting evident acetate-fermentation. Additionally, a high abundance of Candidatus Methanoperedens was identified in samples with apparent methane oxidation. Comparing our findings with those in other areas, we found that various factors, such as groundwater temperature, DOM abundance and types, and hydrogeological conditions, may lead to differences in groundwater methane cycling. This study offered a new perspective and understanding of methane cycling in worldwide shallow alluvial-lacustrine aquifer systems without geothermal disturbance.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Xianglianhuazhuo formula (XLHZ) has a potential therapeutic effect on chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). However, the specific molecular mechanism remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the effect of XLHZ on CAG in vitro and in vivo and its potential mechanisms. METHODS: A rat model of CAG was established using a composite modeling method, and the pathological changes and ultrastructure of gastric mucosa were observed. YY1/miR-320a/TFRC and ferroptosis-related molecules were detected. An MNNG-induced gastric epithelial cell model was established in vitro to evaluate the inhibitory effect of XLHZ on cell ferroptosis by observing cell proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptosis, and molecules related to ferroptosis. The specific mechanism of action of XLHZ in treating CAG was elucidated by silencing or overexpression of targets. RESULTS: In vivo experiments showed that XLHZ could improve the pathological status and ultrastructure of gastric mucosa and inhibit ferroptosis by regulating the YY1/miR-320a/TFRC signaling pathway. The results in vitro demonstrated that transfection of miR-320a mimics inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and invasion while promoting cell apoptosis. MiR-320a targeted TFRC and inhibited ferroptosis. Overexpression of TFRC reversed the inhibitory effect of miR-320a overexpression on cell proliferation. The effect of XLHZ was consistent with that of miR-320a. YY1 targeted miR-320a, and its overexpression promoted ferroptosis. CONCLUSION: XLHZ inhibited ferroptosis by regulating the YY1/miR-320a/TFRC signaling pathway, ultimately impeding the progression of CAG.
